OKNAPC is an acronym for the Oklahoma Naval Academies Parents Club.  We are a joint sea-going service academy club that includes families and friends of the:

  • United States Naval Academy

  • United States Coast Guard Academy

  • United States Merchant Marine Academy

  • Naval Academy Prep School

...hence the plural usage of "Academies" in the club name.

On Becoming  "Semper Gumby" Parents

The Marine Corps  says "Semper Fidelis" - Always Faithful.

USNA, USCGA & USMMA  Parents say "Semper Gumby" - Always Flexible.

Life at USNA, USCGA and USMMA is dynamic and changes in policy occur continually.  Schedules change at the Academies and that's a law in the universe.  Your plans and other logistical considerations may have to change if you want to go with the flow.  What was done last year at the Academies may not be what is done this year.   Your Midshipman or Cadet may end up with duty at any time.  Each company is different ...it all depends on the company and the military duties assigned to them.

Remember also that the Services own your child.   Their military timetables are what they focus on and may not necessarily fit into your family plans.  They exercise their right to change operations plans at their discretion.
Things change and ups-and-downs will come, no matter how you plan.  The Academies my change schedules often with little to no notice, and you and your midshipman/cadet have to fit in ... hence the term “Semper Gumby” - Always Flexible.  "Semper Gumby" is a watchword that evolved into the parents motto ...remembering to remain verrrrry flexible by applying large doses of Semper Gumby.   It is admittedly one of the most valuable attitudes you’ll learn as a Mid/Cadet Parent.

Be flexible with your plans, keep a sense of humor, and have faith in the Academies.   Be sure to have the ability to make last minute changes.   Thanks to the Zets for this term.

Enjoy fair winds!
