The U.S. Coast Guard Academy and U.S. Coast Guard
award the Marksmanship Ribbon under the same criteria as the USNA. The Coast Guard issues two
ribbons - the Coast Guard Pistol Marksmanship Ribbon and the Coast
Guard Rifle Marksmanship Ribbon. The Marksmanship "Device" (S pin, E pin) is
awarded for qualification at the higher levels of Sharpshooter and Expert.
Like the Navy, for those who receive an Expert qualification, the Marksmanship
Medal is also awarded.
The U.S. Coast Guard is replacing the M9 Beretta service pistol.
The USCG is the first branch of the US Armed Forces to retire the M9 pistol
along with the 9mm round it fires. The M9 is being replaced by the
.40 caliber Sig P229 R DAK. Their studies on the M9 site:
- 9mm is underpowered
- Increased frame failure rates
- Unreliability issues
- 5,000 round service life
The USCG has 47,000 active and reserve personnel.
